Grey Is The New Black

When your hair starts greying, many things about it change. In addition to the different colors growing in, the texture may seem more coarse, wiry or untameable and its reaction to color services may differ. This means the way you color, care and treat your hair should shift as well to keep strands worthy of envy.

Grey and white hair occurs as the hair shaft begins to produce less melanin. Because melanin is lacking, the strands become thinner and the cuticle more fragile and easily damaged. Often as the hair becomes grey, your scalp starts to produce less oils that protect and soften your hair. The hair then becomes dehydrated and in turn, feels coarser and kinkier.

This process can be a lot easier to handle with the use of moisturizing and strengthening shampoos, conditioners and care products. If you already use professional products, all you need to do is switch to a different version. For example, if you use Oribe’s Signature Shampoo and Conditioner, use Oribe’s Silverati Shampoo and Conditioner instead. This is because products specifically designed for grey hair have high levels of moisture to help calm, soften and protect your hair. They also have neutralizing tones to help combat the yellowing caused by minerals in water and hair products like argan oil. If you use hair products, try adding a leave in conditioner or hydrator like Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream. Sometimes, all you need is moisture instead of hold to tame your texture.

Greying strands may react differently to the color. Grey is often more resistant and regrowth may be more noticeable. This means you may have to process a little longer, your stylist may change your formula or you might even switch it up completely. Some clients start using a demi permanent when their hair becomes more than 50% grey. This is because it helps blend the grey and it fades out gradually for a much softer grow out. Demi permanents like Goldwell Colorance also help smooth the cuticle and add shine, making hair feeling better than it did before the color. If you’re considering color, you can always talk to your stylist at Lola Hair Studio and ask about all of your options. We also have a previous blog highlighting different color services, titled Men’s Haircolor, which explains a little more indepthly the differences of each service and color.

We always encourage whatever you’re comfortable with so if you wanna rock it, by all means, wear it proud! Make sure you get regular trims (every 4-12 weeks depending on your haircut), to keep split ends at bay and always use a heat protectant when blow-drying or using styling tools. If you need an extra boost of moisture or repair, consider a glossing treatment or a hair mask once a week like Oribe’s Signature Moisture Masque or Intense Conditioner for Moisture and Control. Your stylist can use the products in your hair during your visit so you can see and feel the difference. It’s possible to have beautiful, shiny, smooth grey hair. All it takes is a few little changes!
